Hoodoo Butte is a 5700' (1737 m) volcanic cinder cone located on the crest of the Cascade Range in central Oregon.

On your map, it's about 2.5 miles southwest of Santiam Pass (Highway US 20, milepost 81), and about 1.5 miles west of the Pacific Crest Trail. For the GPS-inclined, that's about 44.402 N, 121.882 W (WGS84 datum).

Weather forecasts for the Northern Oregon Cascades - Santiam Pass area and other zones are provided by the National Weather Service office in Portland, OR.

Ideas? Most of the instruments and software used to generate these weather condition pages were provided by the Santiam Pass Ski Patrol.

The precipitation sensor data is provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), which maintains many "SNOTEL" sites from New Mexico to Alaska.

Notes:
  • Forest information
  • 2011 06/25 - Added moon rise & set times in the "Light Level" section. While the times appear to be correct, one known bug is that on days when there is not a moon rise or set, a time is computed and given anyway. Beware of moon rise or set times between 11PM and 1AM until this note is removed. (Another good reason not to stay up late.)
  • 2011 10/01 - Wind direction graph change: Reduced the number of azimuth readings used to indicate direction to try to filter false NNE readings from a dying sensor. All NNE direction indications are suspect.
  • 2011 10/01 - Wind direction problem: Directions near "E" or "WSW" are reported as NNE due to the sensor wearing-out. It tends to point those directions a lot, so the resistor is worn in those areas.
  • 2012 02/10 - Snow depth sensor is back. A CAT5 cable network box plug-in apparently was put under stress and dislodged a connection. Re-seated it and the sensor came back alive. (Might have to find a way to protect it from getting stressed again.) (~4' cable to punch-down block)
